Raising Doubts
The acting superb, the cinematography powerful, in this very artistic film nothing is left to chance, sybolism abounds. We watch the ruthlessness of one woman who believes she battles on the side of virtue. But we are left as she is; with doubts about the validity of her "certainty" and the narrowness of her vision. Not to mention the obvious doubts about a system which rewards trangressors and punishes the innocent.
I found some of the most poigniant nuances were the physical spaces of the movie the school, church, and nunnery; vast spaces, glorious 12 ft ceilings, floors polished to a mirror shine by the labours of the faithful, while the paint is peeling and the grime builds up in the corners.
The overall attitude being so indicative of those times that the form, posture and appearance of things was much more important than the actual substance and heart. The protagonist and antagonist both leave me disillusioned and hurt and this is the truth of the movie Doubt; there is no one among us who has not acted in "sin" and no one among us who has not done some good, some how to some one at some time.
